Recently someone asked me why we should memorize Bible verses. This is certainly a legitimate question considering our current access to multiple ways both print and digital. In answer here are some reasons (and certainly not an exhaustive list) I feel that it is important to memorize.
- It is vital to our very life. “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” Deuteronomy 8: 3b.
- To help us to keep from sinning. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119: 11.
- It helps us to guide our thoughts in a way that is pleasing to God. ” For as he thinks within himself, so he is.” Proverbs 23: 7.
- Having verses readily available protects us from the devil’s schemes. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6: 11-17.
- In these increasingly chaotic, uncertain times we can have a solid point for our thoughts and actions. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Second Timothy 3: 16, 17.
- Knowing verses helps us when we want to witness to others. “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” One Peter 3: 15.
- This one is the most important reason. God requires it of us. “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 11: 18,19.
So here are 7 of my reasons to memorize verses from the Bible. There are many others. Please tell me another reason that you have along with Bible reference that displays it. I’d love to hear from you.
I really like the 7 reasons but more important I think they will help us grow in faith and help protect us from the enemy

Thanks, Gary, I certainly agree with you. Do have any specific Bible verses in mind to support this?

I know many of the verses but not the Bible reference. Is it important to know where to find a verse if you know what God is telling you in that verse.
